Job Summary
Responsible for providing comprehensive, evidence-based critical care services to patients in the Medical/Surgical Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Leads the multidisciplinary critical care team in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and management of critically ill patients with complex cardiovascular, pulmonary, thoracic, and vascular conditions. Promotes exceptional patient outcomes, quality, safety, patient experience, and collaboration across the continuum of care.
Essential Job Duties
- Provides nights, weekends, and day shift coverage of critical care services for the medical/surgical ICU, including admission, evaluation, diagnosis, treatment planning, and ongoing management of critically ill medical and post operative patients.
- Performs and exhibits proficiency with standard critical care procedures.
- Adheres to the latest evidenced based guidelines and best practices, from the Society of Critical Care Medicine and the Society of Thoracic Surgeon, when managing a critically ill population.
- Collaborates closely with cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, pulmonologists, vascular surgeons, anesthesiologists, infectious disease specialists, hospitalists, advanced practice providers, nursing leadership, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals.
- Leads multidisciplinary ICU rounds and coordinates comprehensive treatment plans.
- Ensures timely communication with patients, families, and caregivers regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, prognosis, and goals of care.
- Participates in discussions regarding advanced directives, palliative care, and end-of-life decision-making when appropriate.
- Maintains accurate, complete, and timely medical documentation in the electronic medical record.
- Promotes adherence to regulatory standards, and hospital policies.
- Participates in quality improvement, patient safety, infection prevention, and clinical outcomes initiatives.
- Supports hospital efforts to improve patient experience, reduce complications, and optimize resource utilization.
- Participates in peer review, credentialing, performance improvement, and utilization management activities as requested.
- Assists in the education and mentoring of advanced practice providers, nursing staff, fellows, students, and other healthcare professionals as applicable.
- Maintains professional competence through continuing medical education and ongoing professional development.
- Participates in departmental meetings, medical staff activities, and hospital committees as assigned.
Education & Licensure:
- Medical degree from an accredited university
- Current unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of New Jersey.
- Fellowship trained and Board Certified or Board Eligible in Critical Care Medicine .
- Board Certification in another qualifying primary specialty (Anesthesiology, Surgery, Medicine).
- Current DEA registration.
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).
Experience:
Demonstrated experience managing critically ill adult patients in an ICU setting with 1–2 years of post-training experience (exceptional new graduates considered)
Experience caring for post operative cardiovascular, pulmonary, thoracic surgical, and vascular patients.
Have experience (or interest in training) with:
- Percutaneous tracheostomy placements, weaning, and management
- Bronchoscopic management of pulmonary hemorrhage and bronchial obstruction
- Insertion of pigtail and surgical chest tubes
- PA catheter placement and interpretation
- TVP insertion
- Management of post open heart epicardial pacing
- Management of post open heart patients with shock supported by Impella or LVAD device
- Management of post open heart related ECMO
- Management of acute cardiac tamponade
- Management of acute pulmonary disease and sepsis
Have or willing to obtain certifications for:
- ELSO Adult ECMO Certification (E-AEC)
- National Board of Echocardiography Examination of Special Competence in Critical Care Echocardiography (CCEeXAM)
Knowledge and Skills:
- Expertise in critical care medicine and advanced ICU management.
- Strong clinical decision-making and diagnostic skills.
- Proficiency in invasive bedside procedures and mechanical ventilation management.
- Knowledge of cardiovascular, pulmonary, thoracic, and vascular disease processes.
- Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams in a complex healthcare environment.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Commitment to quality improvement, patient safety, and evidence-based medicine.
- Ability to effectively communicate with patients, families, physicians, and team members.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Proficiency with electronic medical records and clinical information systems.
